Mary Beth Thomas

2015 Recipient of the Charles C. and Suzanne R. McKinney Scholarship for Mitchell High School totaling $12,000 and the Clyde and Mildred Wright Endowment Scholarship totaling $20,000. Thomas will receive $32,000 over four years. 


MaryBeth Thomas of Bakersville, NC graduated from Mitchell High School where she lettered in volleyball, basketball and softball. She was also a member of the Dramatic Arts Club and the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, where she discussed problems facing students in the justice system. During high school, Thomas participated in Project PROMISE, a semester-long internship program that aims to increase healthcare availability in rural areas. She also attended Governor’s School NC East as a Visual Arts student during her junior year. Thomas hopes to pursue extensive research and make revolutionary strides in medicine. However, prior to joining research scholars at UNC Chapel Hill, she will be traveling the world performing service as one of six individuals selected to receive the Global Gap Year Fellowship. She will explore sustainable healthcare during the Gap Year, in addition to music and art instruction.
